Craig's Cake Shop, Madison, Wisconsin: November Cakery of the Month
By Carey Ide, Co-Founder, Celebration Stadium
College football played at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, is endlessly entertaining and with three alumni and one currently enrolled student in the family, we love celebrating the Badgers. Sports Illustrated voted the University of Wisconsin, Madison, best college football town in the country 2019. And on game day you can see why when Camp Randall Stadium is swimming in a sea of red and white waves.
Grandstanding our fall Badger fan milestone birthdays, we contacted Craig’s Cake Shop in Verona, WI to help us create a celebratory sweet treat showcased by Celebration Stadium. Craig's designed this incredible one-of-a kind Badger football helmet cake with one layer of pumpkin cake, one layer of vanilla cake, and a cheesecake mousse filling. They also cleverly crafted the bright green base of icing to look like a football field. The bakery abides by licensing guidelines and was given permission from UW-Madison to use an image of the 'Motion W' printed on an edible frosting sheet for the logo (Craig’s also has access to logos from all major sports teams and can create an edible image of choice). So in addition to singing Happy Birthday, "On Wisconsin" is a must too!
Founded in 2000, Craig’s Cake Shop is a family-owned, commercially-licensed bakery inventing colorful, delicious and artisan hand-baked cakes, mini cakes, and cupcakes. Owner and manager Elisa Romanowich thoughtfully says, "We are honored to be part of your life’s precious milestones — from weddings to birthdays, you’ll never meet a team more passionate about the power of a perfect dessert." Voted Best Cakes by Wisconsin Bride magazine for nine consecutive years, 2010-2018.
Elisa says "we’re proud to be famous for our signature frosting with white chocolate shavings and time-tested recipes. While we put countless hours of heart and soul into each cake’s buttercream-decorated design, their rich texture and mouthwatering flavor always comes first. It’s our goal to create desserts that both look and taste amazing.”
In 2018, Elisa and Andy Romanowich (proud UW-Madison alums, of course!) became the new owners to preserve Craig’s longstanding traditions while bringing a modern touch — and more options for customers — to their southern Wisconsin cake shop. "We’ve kept the same recipes, bakers, and decorators that the Verona community knows and loves, plus added grab-and-go options like mini cakes and other desserts that make our delicious creations more accessible to families throughout the area. A lot has changed throughout the past decades, but one thing has never wavered: our commitment to quality desserts that make our customers jump for joy” pledges Elisa. And jump for joy they do, especially when the hip hop group House of Pain’s song "Jump Around" is played at Camp Randall between 3rd and 4th quarter for Badger fans!
